The Richard L.D. and Marjorie J Morse Department of Special Collections is home to the manuscript collections, specialized print materials, and University Archives. Notable collecting areas include the Consumer Movement, cookery, Kansas life and culture, and Kansas State University history.
The mission of the department is to collect, preserve, and make accessible materials the strengthen its research collections. Department staff and students assist in supporting the research of K-State faculty, students, staff and the general public.
Hours:
The Student Assistant will be working 15-20 hours each week. The work normally will be accomplished between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Availability to work over breaks and during the summer is preferred.
Description of Duties:
- Assists department curators and archivists with projects as assigned.
- Conducts initial contact with and reference interviews of researchers (in person, telephone and e-mail) to determine material required for research. Retrieves requested materials. Advises researchers regarding special collections reading room policies.
- Processes special collections holdings as directed by curators and archivists (holdings include university records, collections of personal papers or research strength areas, or printed materials); creates online descriptions of collections.
- Researches and compiles information for projects under the guidance of department faculty.
- Maintains vertical files as directed.
- Answers department telephone and transfers calls within the department.
- Assists with shelving and maintaining collections in storage areas.
- Performs shelf reading to ensure materials are in appropriate locations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
All of these steps will be taught to the successful applicant.
Required Skills:
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and online communication tools
- Attention to detail
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to transport boxes up to 40 lb.
Helpful Skills:
- Customer service experience
- Familiarity with the K-State Libraries catalog
- Basic information literacy skills
- Interest in history
