This position works under the general supervision of the Interlibrary Services (ILS) Borrowing staff and all ILS work areas. This position enables the Borrowing Services component of ILS to obtain research materials, not owned by K-State Libraries, from other libraries throughout the State of Kansas and from other academic, public, and corporate institutions nationally/internationally.
The main duties involve the processing of Interlibrary Service requests to borrow materials from other libraries for the use of Kansas State University students, faculty, & staff. The work requires training and hours of experience to provide the services listed. This training will be provided before a student is expected to perform the described duties and expectations.
Job responsibilities for this position are listed below and may change as other duties are assigned to include other areas of Hale Library.
All student assistants will be required to be cross-trained in Borrowing and Lending.
Start Date:
June 4, 2018, but preferably as early as May 14, 2018.
Hours:
1-2 students to cover combined 20-25 hours for Summer 2018, coverage M-F sometime between 8:00am-4:30pm. Preference given to students with continued availability during Fall 2018 semester, and beyond.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Process requests by K-State patrons via OCLC or RAPID (electronic copies of book chapters and articles as well as loans of items from other libraries) within our main program – ILLiad.
- Receive new loans to process for pick-up for patrons. Check-in materials to be returned to lenders.
- Answer phones - take messages, answer various questions from patrons, or transfer calls to appropriate department or person/s.
- In the absence of full-time staff, cover daily work requirements by processing requests timely and accurately.
- Provide back-up to Lending students which may include: retrieving materials from the stacks (requiring knowledge of Library of Congress cataloguing rules), scanning materials, and process incoming mail.
- Assist with various student assignments given by staff, and help with training new student employees.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Good customer service skills.
- Strong verbal communication and written communication skills.
- Computer experience with software applications such as Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and PowerPoint.
- Record of regular work attendance.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Work independently without supervision.
- Have pride in your work performance.
- Respect confidentiality of persons and information.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Knowledge of Library of Congress bibliographic citations to match correct records to requests.
- Knowledge of library policies to apply to specific situations especially answering customer telephone calls.
- Experience using K-State Libraries to assist in retrieving, giving directions or answering telephone inquiries.
- Interlibrary loan work experience.
- Knowledge of foreign language/s.
